Yep I did! Failed again.

Cloudy day?
Recently I was lucky enough to facilitate a conversation with a group of fantastic women about cultivating resilience. As the women spoke up about their their world views, it became obvious that they had managed to harness a self belief in spite of some very difficult times. They knew the sun was there, even if it was a cloudy day. This is my favorite work and the type of workshops I would be proud to continue to facilitate in the next 6 months. Talking about cultivating resilience and becoming more aware of negative self talk and unhelpful beliefs has and continues to be my own personal work and although I know I have a lot of work left to do, I have moved miles from the insecure little girl who didn’t know herself at all. So in the spirit of #boostyourbrandchallenge with @aarti.parmar and this week’s question, I would be proud to be offering this workshop regularly to networking groups, corporate lunch & learns or anywhere people are gathering (virtually right now of course) in the next 6 months. Do I look happy? Well I was! Happiness is such a great feeling isn’t it? I love nothing better. But I’m not always happy that is for sure. In fact right after this picture was taken I became frustrated and was not smiling anymore! It wasn’t over anything serious for sure but in a split second I went from pure joy to irritation. Which emotion was right? What should I do with the more negative emotion now that it has arrived? My irritation was short lived but it did help me figure out why I was feeling a bit unsettled for the past few days. I wasn’t thrilled with this feeling but instead of rejecting it and saying “I shouldn’t feel this way”, I let it happen and asked myself why. Spending time resisting the unwelcome emotion or worse yet judging myself for it only serves to invalidate the feeling. I checked it out, looked for the information it was giving me and was able to shift back quite quickly. Emotions are information. Don’t ignore them, even if they are unpleasant. #alwayslearning

Recent research around loneliness and the brain have shown some important findings for understanding our behavior. ⁣
⁣
Simply put, there are recent research studies that are suggesting that those who report a perceived sense of loneliness may actually have distinct differences in their brain, specifically the part of the brain that can imagine, remember and plan. ⁣
⁣
So what does this say about us as we experience loneliness during this difficult time? ⁣
⁣
A suggestion is that because the area of the brain that appears to be enhanced by loneliness can imagine and remember, perhaps as we experience loneliness we can actually help ourselves by imagining and remembering social contexts. ⁣
⁣
Seeking a sense of belonging to others while being asked to self isolate may need to partially be an internal process. Remembering connections, imagining being reunited and visualizing these future events may help fill the desire for connections. ⁣
⁣
There is no true replacement for the sense of belonging and connection that we are all craving but if we can help ourselves along the way with the way we think, maybe the loneliness can be managed in the short term. ⁣

Don’t underestimate the strength and power of your own ability to help you manage this time. ⁣
